Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez has provided an injury update on captain Lionel Messi, after The Herons opened their Leagues Cup defence with a 2-0 win over Puebla on the morning of July 28.
Messi was sidelined with an ankle injury in Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time win over Colombia in the Copa America final earlier this month. Since then, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has missed three games for his club, with a return date still unclear.
Suarez recently said after the victory over Puebla that his teammates are reaching their best physical condition and will soon return to the field:
“Everyone knows how committed Leo Messi is to this club, to the national team and how much he wants to play. As the months go by, he is getting closer to the day he returns to the pitch, where we all want to see Messi.”
Lionel Messi had a difficult start to his first season at Inter Miami, with injuries. The 1987-born legend contributed 14 goals and 11 assists in 15 matches across all competitions in 2024.
That includes 12 goals and nine assists in 12 MLS games , where the Herons lead the standings by five points after 25 games. M10’s other goalscoring contributions include two goals and two assists in three games in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, where Tata Martinez’s side were eliminated in the quarter-finals.
In that tournament, Messi missed the 1–2 first-leg home defeat to Monterrey due to injury, but provided an assist in the return leg, but The Herons lost 1–3 and 2–5 on aggregate.
